Great news if your a jailbreaker. The Library of Congress has added new rules in the DMCA that allow (among other things) you to legally jailbreak or root your device. This is great news as while it never has exactly been illegal jailbreaking/rooting has always been in a bit of a legal grey area.
The official explanation of the new rules:
Computer programs that enable wireless telephone handsets to execute software applications, where circumvention is accomplished for the sole purpose of enabling interoperability of such applications, when they have been lawfully obtained, with computer programs on the telephone handset.
Do keep in mind however that this isn’t a free ticket to jailbreak or root. All this means is that Apple (or any other company) can’t sue you for jailbreaking your device. You still can get into trouble if you pirate software to jailbreak however and no one is obligated to jailbreak your device for you. The main difference is that now there’s nothing anyone can say to you if you do have a jailbroken or rooted device for the most part. Definitely a big win for the jailbreaking community.
