Google has recently rolled out a new feature in Google Chrome dubbed Side Tabs. Side Tabs are just what the name imply, moving the tabs from the top of Chrome to the left side of the window and thus freeing up a bit of vertical monitor space. Personally I doubt it will be all that useful to more people but it might be helpful to some so read on to find out how to do it.
I tested this running the Dev build of Google Chrome 6.0.472.0 on Windows 7 which is currently the only build Side Tabs work on. To begin simply create a Chrome shortcut on your desktop. Right click it then click Properties.
In the Properties menu click the target menu then tab over to the far right without deleting anything. Then add this flag: –enable-vertical-tabs
Then simply click Apply and close the window.
Now open up the shortcut you just made. Chrome should load up just like normal. Right click the top tab and select Use side tabs.
That’s about it. There likely will be some formatting issues but just minimize and maximize the window and you should be set. There you have it, now you can make Chrome take up even less room at the top of your windows than before.
